Samuel Gosling and colleagues published the best-known study of this question in 2010, surveying over 4,500 people on the Big Five alongside their pet preference.

A preference profile with trait comparisons. There is a real finding behind this one, but the differences are small: dog people scored somewhat higher on extraversion and conscientiousness, cat people somewhat higher on openness. The overlap is enormous, so this predicts nothing about an individual.
