Nostalgia Test: How Strong Is Your Pull to the Past?
Old songs, old places, old eras — how hard do they tug?

About this test
Some people travel light through time; others carry whole eras with them. This warm, 40-question test measures the two great strands of nostalgia: Personal Nostalgia (your own past — the songs tied to people, the old photos, the streets you grew up on) and Cultural Nostalgia (the pull of eras and artifacts — old films, old games, vinyl warmth, and everything they allegedly don't make like they used to). Two separate scores reveal whether your heart keeps its souvenirs, which kind it keeps, and how to enjoy the past without moving in.
What you'll discover
Personal Nostalgia
The pull of your own past — old photos, songs tied to people, revisited places, and kept mementos.
Cultural Nostalgia
The pull of eras and artifacts — old films, music, games, retro aesthetics, and the way things used to be made.
Understanding the Nostalgia Test
The Nostalgia Test looks at how strongly you feel the pull of the past, and where that pull comes from. Some people are grounded in the present, while others naturally revisit earlier chapters, favorite eras, old routines, and the people or places that shaped them. This test explores both your personal nostalgia and your cultural nostalgia, so you can see whether your connection to the past is mainly rooted in your own life story or in the sounds, styles, and objects of earlier times.
Your score can help you understand what kind of memories and eras you return to most often. A stronger personal nostalgia score may point to a deep attachment to meaningful moments, relationships, and familiar places, while a stronger cultural nostalgia score may suggest you’re especially drawn to retro aesthetics, classic media, and the feeling of a past era. Seeing both scores together can give you a clearer picture of how you relate to memory, comfort, and change.
This can be useful because nostalgia is not just about missing old things — it can shape what you seek out, what feels reassuring, and how you balance reflection with moving forward. If you enjoy quizzes that feel personal but still light and shareable, this test offers a simple way to notice your own time-travel habits and understand what the past continues to give you today.
Where the Nostalgia Test comes from
Constantine Sedikides, Tim Wildschut and colleagues at Southampton established nostalgia as a research subject from the early 2000s, and published the Southampton Nostalgia Scale in 2010.
How the Nostalgia Test is scored
A continuous proneness score. The research reversed the older view of nostalgia as maudlin: it is associated with increased social connectedness, meaning and self-continuity, and is often triggered by loneliness, which it then appears to counteract.
