About this test

The Big Five model (OCEAN) is the most scientifically validated personality framework in psychology. This test measures your levels of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism — the five fundamental dimensions that shape who you are.

What you'll discover

Openness

Imagination, curiosity, openness to new experiences and ideas.

Conscientiousness

Organization, discipline, reliability, and goal-directed behavior.

Extraversion

Sociability, energy, assertiveness, and positive emotions.

Agreeableness

Compassion, cooperation, trust, and concern for others.

Neuroticism

Emotional instability, anxiety, moodiness, and stress reactivity.

Understanding the Big Five Personality Test

Our free Big Five personality test measures your character across the five broad traits psychologists actually use to describe human personality: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Together these traits form the OCEAN model — also called the five-factor model — the framework most personality researchers rely on today. You answer a series of quick self-report statements, and the test maps where you fall on each of the five dimensions.

Unlike type-based quizzes that box you into a single label, this OCEAN test scores you on a spectrum for every trait, so you see nuance instead of a one-size-fits-all category. Whether your openness runs high or low, where your conscientiousness sits, how much your extraversion leans toward energy from people or from solitude — the big five personality traits give a fuller, more flexible picture of how you tend to think, feel, and act.

The test is completely free to take and needs no account, no email, and no sign-up. When you finish, you get an instant preview of your five trait scores right away. If you want the full written analysis — a detailed breakdown of each trait, what your specific combination means, and how it shows up in daily life — you can unlock the complete report for $1.99 or with an Unlimited plan. Take the free big five test online whenever you're ready, see your OCEAN results in minutes, and decide from there.

Where the Big Five Personality Test comes from

The Five-Factor Model emerged from decades of lexical research — analysing the trait words languages actually contain — and was consolidated by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae in the NEO-PI-R (1992). Lewis Goldberg's 1993 paper set out why five factors keep reappearing across languages and cultures.

How the Big Five Personality Test is scored

Five independent dimensions, each scored continuously and reported as a percentile against our norms rather than a type. Traits are stable but not fixed: conscientiousness tends to rise across adulthood and neuroticism to fall, a pattern consistent enough that researchers call it the maturity principle.

Most people finish in about 10 minutes. You answer a set of short self-report statements, rating how much each one sounds like you, and there's no time pressure.

How accurate is the Big Five Personality Test, and what is it based on?

The Five-Factor Model is the personality framework with the strongest research base, consolidated by Costa and McCrae in the NEO-PI-R (1992) after decades of lexical research into the trait words languages actually contain. Goldberg's 1993 paper set out why five factors keep reappearing across languages and cultures. Unlike type systems it scores you continuously on five independent dimensions rather than sorting you into a box, which is why results are stable enough to compare over time.

What do I get from the OCEAN test?

Right after finishing, you see a free instant preview of your scores on all five traits — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The paid full report adds a detailed breakdown of each trait, what your combination means, and how it tends to play out day to day.
